McDonalds - In Aug/Sep 99, changed their anti-discrimination policy to include "sexual orientation" at the same level as religion, national origin, or race. Their policy also substitutes "gender" for "sex."
Gender appears to be innocuous enough because most people think of it as
just another term for "sex" as in male or female. Heck, according to
Webster's dictionary "gender" is defined as "sex." Think again.
It is a wolf in sheep's clothing meant to deceive the uneducated. Sex in
antidiscrimination policies meant that one could not discriminate based upon whether one
was a male or female. By substituting "gender" for "sex"
presuming Webster's definition and later replacing Webster's definition with the little
know U.N. definition for "gender," the community of homosexuals,
transsexuals, and transvestites will also be protected. You see, according to the
U.N. Secretary General, 3 September 1996 - A/51/322 - para 9
--"gender refers to the socially constructed roles played by women and men"
--"since gender roles are contingent on the social and economic context, they can
vary according to the specific context and can change over time"
--"gender is used to refer to the explanations for observed differences between
women and men based on socially assigned roles.
--"the word 'sex' is used to refer to physical and biological characteristics of
women
and men." .
In other words, since "gender" applies to "roles", it will protect any
behavioral relationship that involves men and women that you can think of. A
Cambridge Massachusetts proposed amendment illustrates it best: It adds
"gender" to the list of protected classes, including sex, race, religion, etc.
and later adds the following definition of gender: "Gender" means the
actual or perceived appearance, expression, or identity of a person with respect to
masculinity and femininity. Folks,
